Cabbage is a tasty and nutritious crop that is traditionally grown in beds. It is important to provide the plant with the necessary micro- and macronutrients to get a generous and high-quality harvest.

Fertilizing should begin at the seedling stage, but even after planting in the garden, it is important to apply effective fertilizers on time. Read the OBOZ.UA article on how to fertilize cabbage to make the heads of cabbage large.

How to fertilize cabbage in the garden

Cabbage grows best in a garden with neutral or slightly acidic soil. If the pH is too high, add ash or slaked lime to the soil. Early cabbage needs two fertilizations, while mid- and late-season varieties are fertilized 3-4 times.

An important warning: it is better to apply fertilizers under the root on moist soil - certain solutions can cause burns on the leaves.

Stages of fertilization

The first feeding is carried out 15-20 days after transplanting the seedlings into the garden. Experienced gardeners advise using mineral fertilizers: Dissolve 20 g of superphosphate, 10 g of urea, and 10 g of potassium in 10 liters of water and pour over the previously moistened soil.

The most effective organic fertilizers at this stage are:

  • rotted manure – 5 kg should be dissolved in 50 liters of water and after two days of infusion, additionally dilute the solution with water in a ratio of 1:10
  • granulated chicken manure – also insist in water and dilute additionally before application.

The second feeding is applied two weeks after the first. Urea (30 g for every 10 liters of water), nitrophoska (50 g for 10 liters of water), aqueous infusion of ash (1 glass per 1 liter of water, leave for 4 days, then strain and dilute with water to 10 liters), chicken manure diluted in water (1:15 ratio) or mullein (1:10) will be useful.

The third feeding is required for medium and late varieties. It is best to apply a universal fertilizer: add 30 g of superphosphate and 15 g of micronutrient fertilizers to a concentrated mullein solution, then dilute with water to a total volume of 10 liters.

If at the end of the season, the cabbage has not gained enough weight, you can re-feed it with mullein.

Experienced gardeners use baking soda to increase the shelf life of heads of cabbage and prevent them from cracking. Dissolve 20 g of baking soda in 10 liters of water and water the cabbage at the root.
