Auto experts have conducted research and published a rating of cars that are unprofitable to buy. Some of the models below have recently been discontinued and can only be purchased used. Others are still available in the current model year, but all of them are becoming history due to increased competition, outdated features, insufficient safety offerings, or outdated technology.

Audi A3 e-tron

If you're looking to save money by buying a used car with an alternative powertrain that improves fuel economy, the Audi A3 e-tron, produced from 2013 to 2020, can be a tempting choice. However, Cassie Fields, president of Autoleap, emphasizes that the resale value of this model could drop dramatically.

"Although the Audi A3 e-tron is touted as a luxury plug-in hybrid, its resale value could decline significantly due to the rapid development of electric vehicle technology, making it less attractive over time," Fields said.

Chevrolet Spark

The Chevy Spark was discontinued in 2022. According to experts, the model costs an average of $13,000, which makes it a fairly attractive choice for buyers on a budget. The problem is that the Chevrolet Spark was outdated at the production stage. New, more advanced subcompact cars have already entered the market.

The low price means a low level of equipment, such as manual window and door locking, moderate engine power, and a manual transmission.

Jeep Compass

The Compass is the most affordable vehicle in Jeep's lineup with a starting suggested retail price below $26,000, but there is a reason for this low price.

"Despite its appeal, the Compass suffers from reliability issues and fierce competition in the compact SUV segment, which could potentially lead to a decline in value and quality over the next few years," Fields said. It is also worth paying attention to frequent complaints and problems with the suspension, CVT transmission, wireless control module, and fluid leaks.

Dodge Journey

In 2020, after 12 model years, Dodge discontinued the Journey, an affordable midsize family crossover. Industry professionals pointed to the car's outdated platform and fierce competition in the segment.

The Dodge Journey is outdated and lacks safety features and technologies that are now standard in this class.

Nissan Z

The Nissan Z is a sleek, athletic, and undeniably attractive sports coupe powered by a powerful three-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine with 400 horsepower. But too many generations of production have passed without an update.

"Despite the fact that this is a relatively new model offered by Nissan, the chassis is borrowed from a 16-year-old model," said Melanie Monsoon, an automotive industry expert at Auto Insurance.
