Do women really talk more than men? Scientists have finally revealed the truth

Anna BoklajukNews

It is a well-known fact (or myth?) that women are more talkative than men. So scientists from the University of Arizona decided to conduct a study that finally revealed the truth.

For this analysis, the researchers recorded more than 2000 people. The result showed that the difference between the sexes is smaller than previously thought, MailOnline reports.

For the study, a total of 2197 participants wore a device that periodically recorded short snippets of sound throughout the entire time except during sleep. Scientists collected more than 600,000 recordings, and transcribers counted the number of words spoken by each participant.

The result showed that men spoke an average of 11,950 words per day, while women spoke 13,349. However, despite the findings showing that women are indeed more talkative, experts say that the assumption that women talk more than men is a "stereotype" that often carries negative connotations.

In other words, the gap is not large enough to say whether this difference between the sexes is significant and reliable.

According to a 2007 study, men and women have no significant differences in daily word usage, uttering about 16,000 words a day each. However, the scientists decided to conduct a new study because the results of that one raised concerns that the study's sample was too small and consisted of only college students.

Therefore, the new study provides a clearer picture, but the researchers suggest that further research on sex differences may be needed.

"The study leaves open some questions about whether the two sexes differ in a practically meaningful way in how many words they utter on a daily basis," they concluded and added that the idea that women and men differ in their daily lexical budget is not proven, but it is often used in arguments about gender differences.
