"Deadpool and Wolverine" became the highest-grossing R-rated movie: what it means and how much it grossed at the box office

In recent years, the creators of comic-movies began to release more and more often premieres with a rating of R - no longer focused exclusively on the teenage audience. And box office receipts confirm the correctness of this decision, in particular, the recent record of action movie "Deadpool and Wolverine".

As reported in Disney and Marvel Studios, their tape, released in late July, became the second in history with a rating of R, managed to collect a billion box office. And by this indicator even surpassed the "Joker" from competitors DC, which was the first.

To date, the estimated box office receipts for "Deadpool and Wolverine" are $1.086 billion. It took the movie only 23 days to reach this mark, which is faster than that of "The Joker".

Rating R, assigned to the picture, means that on the territory of the United States, viewing the picture is prohibited to viewers under the age of 17. It has a lot of violence, profanity and explicit scenes. And critics praised "Deadpool and Wolverine" not only for the excellent acting duo of Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, but also for the bold humor.

It is noteworthy that the superhero action movie became the second consecutive Disney premiere that collected a billion at the box office. The first was the family cartoon "Thinking Inside Out 2". Thus, the studio became the only one that was able with its projects to repeat this achievement twice in one year.

In total for the Marvel universe, "Deadpool and Wolverine" became the 11th movie to cross the $1 billion box office mark. This also includes 2 movies for Sony. If you count Disney's haul in total, that's 31 billion-dollar movies for the studio giant (including 3 Fox films before the acquisition).

The film has been showing box office records since its first days in theaters. In the first weekend "Deadpool and Wolverine" collected 444 million dollars worldwide. This was the most successful start for the R-rated picture. The previous record holder was Deadpool 2016.

The producer of the picture and president of Marvel Studios Kevin Faigi said that the secret of the success of the duo movie was, in particular, the policy of the comic studio. It was expected that after its acquisition by Disney, it would begin to smooth out the corners and reduce the rating of all its premieres to G (shown without restrictions - as a rule, such a rating is assigned to the so-called family movie). However, this did not happen. And the adult audience happily went to movies about superheroes.
