NASA astronauts Matthew Dominic, Michael Barratt, and Jeanette Epps, along with Roscosmos cosmonaut Alexander Grebenkin, landed in the Gulf of Mexico off the coast of Pensacola, Florida (USA) today, October 25. Despite schedule delays, the capsule landed successfully.

The Crew-8 mission set a record for the Dragon spacecraft. Due to unfavorable weather conditions, the astronauts were forced to spend two unplanned weeks aboard the International Space Station (ISS), Space.com reports.

"After spending 232 days docked to the space station, Crew-8 is the longest mission the Endeavour space shuttle has conducted in orbit to date," SpaceX said in a post on its X network. The previous longest mission duration of almost 200 days was also set by Endeavour during Crew-2 in 2021.

According to the schedule, the Crew-8 crew was supposed to return to Earth on October 8 after completing their already extended seven-month science mission aboard the ISS. However, Dominika, Barratt, Epps, and Grebenkina were almost daily dissuaded from leaving the station by specialists as NASA and SpaceX flight controllers observed unfavorable weather conditions in the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico, near Dragon's tidal zones.

Only on Wednesday (October 23) did the crew receive permission to undock Endeavor from the Harmony module's forward port to begin their journey home. Two days later, they safely re-entered the Earth's atmosphere and, slowed by parachutes, descended into the Persian Gulf.

SpaceX boats and ships quickly sailed to Endeavour to bring the capsule and Crew-8 members aboard. After a preliminary medical checkup, the crew was flown by helicopter to NASA's Kennedy Space Center on Florida's east coast.

Dominik, Barratt, Epps, and Grebenkin were part of the 70th, 71st, and 72nd expeditionary crews of the orbiting laboratory. According to NASA, they helped conduct hundreds of scientific experiments during their stay on the ISS. Dominick and Barrat tried to go beyond the ISS to perform off-ship tasks, but equipment problems hampered their efforts.
