Cozy villages in Europe to visit in winter

Tired and just want some peace and quiet? Sometimes to relax, you need to get away from the noisy city streets and crowds. Or, for example, go to a cozy town where time seems to stand still and every house tells its own story. So, where a special atmosphere reigns - read below.

Chamonix, France

It is located in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region at the foot of Mount Mont Blanc. In 1924, the first Winter Olympics were held here.

The village is known as a ski resort with 5 ski areas.

The 11-kilometer-long Mont Blanc Tunnel connects it with the Italian tourist location of Courmayeur.

There is a large snow park and 170 kilometers of trails for tourists.

We recommend taking the Montenever train, which takes you to one of the largest glaciers in the Alps, the Mer de Glace. Then you can get to the ice cave by a small lift and see various ice figures.

We recommend taking the Aiguille du Midi cable car to an altitude of 3842 meters to admire the surroundings.

Murren, Switzerland

The ancient alpine village is located at an altitude of over 1638 meters above sea level. It was first mentioned in 1257. An interesting fact: car traffic is prohibited here.

In 1857, a local farmers' cooperative built a hotel in the area. By the end of the nineteenth century, a railroad appeared.

Murren hosted the first Alpine Ski World Championships. To this day, the location is famous for the world's longest downhill run for professionals, the Inferno Marathon.

For tourists, 12 ski lifts were built and more than 28 trails were arranged, with a length of about 53 kilometers.

We advise you to take the cable car to the top of the Schilthorn (2790), where there is a souvenir shop and a revolving restaurant. By the way, it was here that a scene from the James Bond movie was filmed.

Be sure to go to the Trümmelbach glacial waterfall. You can see it from inside the rock complex. Tourists will have to go through underground galleries and tunnels. More than 20,000 liters of water fall into the valley per second.

Obergurgl, Austria

Located in the federal state of Tyrol at an altitude of 1930 meters above sea level. The village became famous for the crash landing of physicist Auguste Picard during the first balloon flight into the stratosphere in 1931.

Today, it is a popular destination for skiing and snowboarding. The season starts in November and lasts until early May. The total length of the trails is more than 110 kilometers.

We advise you to take the Kirchenkarbahn lift to the Motorcycle Museum (3000). Here, tourists can see about 230 steel two-wheelers, including Ducati, Vespa, and Yamaha. There are also retro models of Porsche and Ferrari cars.

Visit the highest church in Austria (1930). It was founded in 1737. In 1967, it was completed by the architect Clemens Holzmeister.

Schwangau, Germany

It is located in the state of Bavaria. The community has been mentioned in documents since the XII century.

The location is known thanks to Louis II. The eccentric monarch dreamed of creating his own world, far removed from reality. He was considered a talented builder and designer. However, due to his huge debts, the ruler was deposed, and he tragically died.

Today, tourists can visit several buildings associated with his life.

First, visit the Hohenschwangau. The building served as the summer residence of Maximilian II. Queen Mary arranged a garden with flowers that were brought from different parts of the Alps. Inside are the swan knight's hall, bedroom, living room, and heroes' room.

Next, visit Neuschwanstein, a 19th-century palace. It was built at the request of the king. The building later became the inspiration for the Sleeping Beauty Castle at Disneyland. Here travelers will see a collection of paintings illustrating operas by German composer Richard Wagner. They will also visit the music hall.

Also go to the Marienbrücke pedestrian rock bridge. Today it serves as an observation deck from which you can admire the majestic structure.
