On three sides, the square is surrounded by the buildings of the Procuratie Vecchie (Old Procuracies, south) and the Procuratie Nuove (New Procuracies, north). On the western side is the Ala Napoleonica (Napoleonic Wing) which connects the square with the wing of the New Procuracies.
The main architectural structures are:
- St. Mark's Cathedral - one of the most famous cathedrals in the world, built in the Byzantine style.
- The bell tower of St. Mark's Cathedral (Campanile) is the tallest building in Venice - its height is almost 99 meters.
- Doge's Palace is the former residence of the Doge of Venice, now a museum.
St. Mark's Square has always been the center of Venice's social life. Important historical events, festivities, and carnivals took place here. And today the square is a popular place for tourists, as there are numerous cafes, restaurants and shops.
