"Complete sabotage". Famous players refused to play for the Ukrainian national volleyball team
At least six leaders of the Ukrainian national volleyball team will not attend the national team's training camp, including two of Ukraine's top scorers last season. According to Suspilne.Sport, citing the president of the Volleyball Federation of Ukraine, Mykhailo Melnyk, representatives of Prometheus, Jan Yereshchenko, Dmytro Teremenko, Gorden Brova, and Vitalii Shchytkov, refused to come to the team's camp.
"They have written applications, attached with certificates from the same doctor that they need to be treated. There is complete sabotage, but it's okay, we will play without them," Melnyk said. However, other players may not arrive at the Ukrainian national team camp. According to Melnyk, these are volleyball players who play in foreign championships.
One of them is the captain of the Ukrainian national team, Oleh Plotnytskyi. He confirmed that he would not play for the national team in the 2024 season and informed the team and the federation about it. Also, diagonal Vasyl Tupchyi, the team's second-best scorer (after Plotnytskyi) in the Golden Euroleague last year, will not come to the national team training camp.
Plotnytskyi said he wants to "take a break" after a difficult season – Oleh became the Italian champion for the first time in his career, and the last game of the final series took place on April 28.
"We are resting now. I have a few ideas, but I can't talk about them. I want to recover. I need to check my knees, again. And in general, I need to get checked after the season, it seems to me that it was a bit hard. I will not come there [to the Ukrainian national team]. Both the team and the management know this. Now I think it's better to take a break," the volleyball player said.
The Ukrainian national team volleyball players have a deadline to report to the team on May 3. That's when the second part of the training camp for the legionnaires, who were finishing up the club season, is to begin.
Melnyk notes that sanctions may be imposed on volleyball players who do not arrive at the Ukrainian national team camp. Among the possible options are disqualification (for players who play in the domestic championship) or a transfer ban (for representatives of foreign championships).
"Will there be any punishment for players who do not come on May 3? Of course, there will be. We will convene the Executive Committee. The team he plays for will be fined 20 thousand hryvnias, and the player will be disqualified," added the VFU president.
