Coca-Cola has recalled its products in some European countries. Elevated levels of chlorates, a substance formed during water purification and food processing using chlorine-containing disinfectants, were found in drinks of several brands.

According to the BBC, the company noted that most of the problematic products were found in Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, and the Netherlands. Five product lines were also found in the UK, but they had already been sold at the time of the recall.

An increased concentration of chlorates was detected in Coke, Fanta, Sprite, Tropico, and Minute Maid beverages. The company clarified that the problem affected a small number of cans of Appletiser, Coca-Cola Original Taste, Coca-Cola Zero Sugar, Diet Coke, and Sprite Zero with production codes from 328 GE to 338 GE.

"An independent expert analysis concluded that any associated risk to consumers is very low," said a company spokesperson. At the same time, no complaints have been received from consumers.

Exposure to high concentrations of chlorate can cause health problems, including thyroid problems, especially in children and infants, and in adults, excessive consumption can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and impede oxygen absorption. Cameron Grazett, a nutritionist at the UK's National Health Service, added that this substance is also used in the production of fireworks.

The manufacturer noted that the problem could have occurred at the Coca-Cola plant in Ghent, Belgium. After the problem was discovered, most of the unsold products were removed from the shelves.

Earlier, OBOZ.UA reported that despite the promises to withdraw from the Russian market, Coca-Cola Co. drinks are still sold in Russia through the subsidiary Coca-Cola HBC, which produced the drink "Good Cola." The original Coca-Cola is imported from neighboring countries, which has allowed the brand to remain one of the leading producers of carbonated beverages in Russia.
