China launches the Shenzhou-19 spacecraft into orbit. Three astronauts will stay at the Tiangong space station for 6 months and conduct 86 experiments.
One of these experiments will study the effect of bricks made from imitation lunar soil on conditions in space. If the test is successful, the bricks could become a key material for the construction of a permanent lunar research station, which China hopes to complete by 2035, Reuters reports.
They flew into space: 48-year-old commander Cai Xuizhe, who was a member of the Shenzhou 14 mission, as well as novice astronauts - 34-year-old former air force pilot Song Lyndon and 34-year-old space flight engineer Wang Haose, Space.com writes.
"The mission will focus on the planned theme of 'biological and physical sciences in space', covering areas such as space life science, basic microgravity physics, space materials science, space medicine and new space technologies. The experiments include structural analysis of protein crystal growth and nonequilibrium dynamics of soft matter in microgravity," said Lin Xiqiang, spokesman for the Chinese Human Space Flight Agency CMSA.
According to the scientists, crewed flights have been a regular part of China's space program for the past two decades. In recent years, their number has increased as China has built and begun operating its Tiangong space station, officially completed in November 2022.
In its pursuit of space primacy, China has focused on the goal of manned lunar landing by 2030. Therefore, within the framework of Shenzhou-14, astronauts will conduct experiments related to future missions to the Earth's satellite.
"We will have a lot of off-ship activities and new scientific experiments," said Song Lyndon, one of the Chinese mission members.
