Captain America: Brave New World fails to live up to a good start

Alina MilsentNews

Captain America: Brave New World failed to meet the expectations of both Marvel Studios and critics as box office receipts plummeted by 68%. Possible reasons for the failure include weak plot, lack of interesting characters, and a general decline in interest in Marvel Cinematic Universe.

According to the latest estimates, the worldwide box office reached $289.4 million, but both critics and audiences did not rate the film very highly. The film started great, but lost a significant portion of its profits on the second weekend.

Experts suggest that the failure may lead to a revision of the Marvel Cinematic Universe development strategy and a reduction in budgets for future projects.

Although it is common for blockbusters to see a decline in the second weekend, only two films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe have had such low profits: The Marvels (2023) lost 78% of its opening weekend, and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (2023) lost 70%.

Although Anthony Mackie was in the lead role, critics and audiences were disappointed. The CinemaScore audience rating is "B-", which is quite a low score for Marvel. The movie, which was supposed to bring the franchise back to success after Avengers: Endgame, on the contrary, confirmed that the studio is going through hard times.

Nevertheless, the film has already grossed $289.4 million at the global box office, of which almost $150 million came from international markets. Given the lack of serious competitors in the coming weeks, the movie still has a chance to improve its financial performance.

Meanwhile, Oz Perkins' horror film The Monkey, an adaptation of Stephen King's story, was the leader among the weekend's new releases. The film opened with $14.2 million for Neon, the second-best performance in the history of this independent distributor after its previous hit, Longlegs, which debuted with $22.4 million.

Neon can also celebrate the success of another of its projects, Anora, directed by Sean Baker. This film continues to move confidently toward the Oscars and has won 3 major awards at Independent Spirit on the eve of the main film award of the year.
