Brazil faces suspension from the 2026 World Cup: what is the essence of the scandal
Brazilian national teams and clubs may be suspended from all international competitions, including the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, and the country's membership in the International Football Federation (FIFA) may be suspended. Such harsh sanctions threaten South Americans for government interference in the activities of the local association.
The relevant data is available to the Associated Press news agency, which has a letter from FIFA to the Brazilian Football Federation (FFB). On December 7, a Rio de Janeiro court removed FFB President Ednaldo Rodrigues from office for violations in the election procedure for his position.
FIFA has called on the FFB not to hold new elections for the head of the organization at the request of the authorities. "No decisions affecting the FFB, including any elections or calls for elections, will be recognized. If this is not respected, FIFA will have no choice but to refer the matter to the relevant governing body for review and decision, which may also include suspension," the letter reads.
It should be noted that FIFA has historically considered national federations to be autonomous from state authorities. Any interference in their activities is considered a violation of the FIFA charter.
As reported by OBOZ.UA, the European Football Union (UEFA) is preparing to suspend Catalan FC Barcelona from the Champions League for several seasons.
