Biden extends special status for refugees from Ukraine in the US: what it means
President Joe Biden's administration has extended the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) program for refugees from Ukraine, Venezuela, Sudan, and other countries, allowing them to remain in the United States with work permits and protection from deportation until 2026. This decision ensures that more than 100,000 Ukrainians will have the right to stay in the United States until August next year.
This was reported by The New York Times. The publication reminds that at the end of last year, U.S. Secretary of State Anthony Blinken recommended extending this protection in several official letters.
"The extension of the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) program allows immigrants to stay in the country with work permits and protection from deportation for another 18 months after their current protection expires in the spring," the publication says.
Earlier, Donald Trump criticized the program and promised to end it, at least for some states. During his first presidential term, he revoked the status of about 400,000 people from El Salvador and other countries, but his decision was later challenged in the courts.
The TPS program was introduced in 1990 to protect foreigners who cannot safely return to their countries due to war, instability, or disaster. President Biden expanded the program in response to the war in Ukraine and the crises in Venezuela, Haiti, and other countries.
The previous Trump administration had tried to cut the program, but the current extension makes it legally difficult to cancel it before the status expires in 2026. According to experts, this decision is important for the protection of refugees' rights and reflects the US commitment to humanitarian obligations.
As reported by OBOZ.UA, earlier the Bulgarian government extended the program of assistance and temporary protection for refugees from Ukraine. Therefore, it will be valid at least until March 4, 2025.
