Beautiful people earn more: study reveals a link between attractiveness and career development

Anna BoklajukNews

Researchers from the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences  in Baltimore (USA) have found a link between physical attractiveness and career success. They found out that attractive people earn 11% more than their less beautiful colleagues.

In their study, the team analyzed the careers of more than 40,000 graduates who earned a master's degree. The results of point not only to higher salaries for attractive people, but also to greater chances of getting a prestigious job, MailOnline writes.

"Appearance shapes not just the start of a career, but its trajectory over decades. These findings reveal a persistent and compounding effect of beauty in professional settings," says study leader Professor Nikhil Malik.

In order to quantify the attractiveness of each participant, the researchers used artificial intelligence to conduct the study and observed how their career success, including salary and position, changed over 15 years.

The results showed that the most attractive graduates earned 2.4 percent more than their less beautiful peers. But for the top 10 percent of attractive people, this figure increased to more than 11 percent. Researchers describe this effect as a "beauty premium."

In addition to salary, attractive people were also 52.4 percent more likely to hold prestigious positions 15 years after graduation.

The researchers also found that the benefits of attractiveness vary considerably by industry. The highest beauty premium was seen among those in the management and consulting industry, which requires frequent social interaction, while the lowest percentage was identified in technical fields, including IT and engineering.

"This research underscores how biases tied to physical appearance persist in shaping career outcomes, even for highly educated professionals," says co-author of the study, Param Vir Singh.
