Alina MilsentNews

The High Tatras are a mountain range located on the border of Poland and Slovakia. It is the highest part of the Carpathian Mountains and attracts tourists from all over the world with its beauty, majesty and variety of recreational opportunities.

The High Tatras have been recognized as the best European travel destination due to its incredible scenery. Express shares why it is worth visiting this mountain range.

Ryanair and Wizz Air offer cheap flights to Poprad, a city just 15 minutes from the mountains. This region is part of a nature reserve, which, together with the Polish part, forms a UNESCO biosphere reserve.

The High Tatras are a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts. There are many hiking trails of varying difficulty. You can also go rock climbing, mountaineering, cycling and do other sports here. In winter, the High Tatras turn into a popular ski resort.

If you are visiting this region for the first time, here are some places worth seeing:

  • Tatranská Lomnica ski resort has the steepest slope in Slovakia at an altitude of 2,190 m;
  • Lomnický štít, connected to Tatranská Lomnica by a cable car, offers panoramic views of the surrounding mountains;
  • Štrbské Pleso, where the World Ski Championships were held in 1970.

For experienced skiers, there is an opportunity to visit the Jasná resort, where one of the main stages of the FIS Alpine World Cup was held. The resort has 50 km of slopes and modern infrastructure.

However, the High Tatras are not just about winter activities. There are more than 600 km of hiking trails suitable for walks at any time of the year. You can go to the waterfalls or spend the whole day in the mountains. Many of the trails lead to chalets where you can eat or spend the night, and some of them even provide luxury spa services.

The traditional delivery of food to remote mountain huts is performed not by helicopters, but by Tatar Sherpas, who climb to altitudes of up to 2,000 meters with loads of up to 100 kg.

Don't forget to try traditional dishes such as potato dumplings with sheep cheese, hearty soups and stews.

After a long walk, experts recommend relaxing in one of the best spas in the Kempinski at Štrbské Pleso or the historic Grandhotel Starý Smokovec. For a more budget option, you can choose AquaCity Poprad.

The High Tatras have a well-developed tourist infrastructure. There are hotels, restaurants, cafes, shops, and other establishments where you can relax and enjoy comfort. There are also many travel agencies that offer a variety of excursions and tours.
