Away from the air-raid sirens: what locations in Uzhhorod to visit during the Christmas holidays
The daily sound of a siren has a significant impact on our mood. Unfortunately, some people are getting used to it, while others want to run away as far as possible. Despite the war, Ukrainians do not give up and continue to live, work, love, dream and, of course, travel. Today, we are going to tell you about a more or less safe place to go during the holidays.
Uzhhorod Castle
A fortification of the IX century. In winter, when the city is covered with snow, it takes on a special charm. You can stroll through the courtyard, admire the panorama of the city and feel the spirit of the past centuries.
Once upon a time, the principality of the legendary ruler Laborets was located here.
The hallmark of the attraction is the bastions. They have the shape of an irregular quadrangle and are connected by a high wall. Inside the palace is a small courtyard surrounded by walls and towers.
There is a local history museum on the territory, which houses a collection of archaeological finds, ancient weapons and armor, as well as exhibitions telling about the history of the center.
There are many legends about the castle. One of them tells about the daughter of a voivode who fell in love with a simple servant and broke strict rules. When the boy was in danger, the girl decided to save him. However, fate decreed otherwise. The betrayed and punished young woman was walled up in the building. It is said that on moonless nights her moaning is heard, and her ghost wanders the corridors.
Parade of Mykolaychyks
The idea for the event originated in 1993 when teacher Fedir Shandor decided to add some color to the celebration of St. Nicholas Day. On his initiative, students from one of Uzhhorod's schools prepared for the event on their own: they sewed festive hats and learned songs.
On December 19, the young Mykolaychyks took to the streets for the first time and gave sweets to passersby. The success of this experiment convinced the organizers that the event should become a good tradition, and the following year other institutions joined in.
The route of the Miracle Worker's helpers starts from Petofi Square, then goes to Teatralna, Poshtova, and Narodna streets. Then they go to the regional state administration and visit children in the hospital.
Museum of Folk Architecture and Life
Located near the majestic Uzhhorod Castle. The attraction was founded in 1965 and opened in June 1970. Its area covers more than 5.5 hectares.
The museum houses samples of housing and farms of different peoples who inhabited Zakarpattia: Dolyna, Romanians, Hungarians, Boikos, and Hutsuls. Today, the complex includes more than seven estates, six houses, a church, a bell tower, a school, a smithy, a mill, and a tavern. And its funds have more than 14,000 exhibits telling about the rich history and culture of the region.
Synagogue
The building was erected in 1794. However, in the XX century, it was destroyed by fire. Therefore, the house of worship was rebuilt again, but on a different site on the banks of the Uzh River. An interesting fact: the building has no analogues in the whole of Europe.
Its architecture is dominated by a combination of romanticism and Byzantine and Arab-Moroccan motifs. Unfortunately, after the tragic events of World War II, the synagogue underwent radical changes. Since the 1950s, it has served as a concert hall.
Korzo
A pedestrian street in the historic center of the city. The architectural ensemble was formed in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It was named in honor of the Italian counts Druget, who started the tradition of evening walks along the central lane of Uzhhorod.
Today, the Korzo is considered not only the main meeting place for Uzhhorod residents, but also a place where you can enjoy the calm atmosphere, sit in a cozy cafe, look into interesting shops, or just stroll through the old courtyards.
In winter, everything is decorated with Christmas decorations. You can also meet street musicians on this street.
By the way, be sure to go to the nativity scene near the city Christmas tree. It is set up on December 24 on Sandor Petofi Square.
We wish you a safe and atmospheric trip!
