An extreme cable car was opened in Switzerland

In Switzerland, a cable car was recently opened that was named the steepest in the world. This new cableway, which connects the valley village of Stähelberg with the town of Murren, has an extraordinary incline of 159.4%.

This makes it one of the most impressive cable cars in the world, as it takes only four minutes to travel to this height of 775 meters, euronews reports. The cable car route is almost 1194 meters long, and two specially designed cabins are used along the way, which can accommodate up to 85 passengers.

The cable car operates without on-board personnel, thanks to autonomous monitoring systems that include cameras and sensors that constantly monitor its operation. This organization allows for passenger safety and efficient operation without the need for human control.

The official opening ceremony of the cable car took place on December 13, when the first cabin traveled the route. Regular passengers were able to use the new transport the next day, on December 14. This opening was an important event for tourism and infrastructure development in Switzerland.

Part of the large project "Schilthornbahn 20XX"

The new cable car is part of the large-scale "Schilthornbahn 20XX" project, which includes several construction phases. Over time, the road will connect Stehelberg and Murren with other important points along the route, including Birg and Schilthorn. As a result of this route, travel time will be reduced from 32 to 18 minutes, which will significantly improve transportation.

The famous restaurant on the top of the Schiltzhorn

The Schiltzhorn, one of the main points of the route, is famous for its revolving restaurant "Piz Gloria", which offers a breathtaking 360-degree view of more than 200 other mountain peaks. This place became famous thanks to the 1969 James Bond movie On Her Majesty's Secret Service. The restaurant was designed by Bernese architect Konrad Wolf and is the world's first revolving restaurant.

Even though the steepest cable car has already opened its doors to passengers, the Schilthornbahn 20XX project is not yet complete. The next section between Murren and Birg is also expected to be launched in the near future. The entire project is scheduled to be completed in the spring or summer of 2026, after which the entire cable car network will connect these areas to other popular tourist destinations in the Alps.

This project will not only improve transportation accessibility, but will also be an important step in the development of tourism in Switzerland. Cable cars have long been an important part of mountain resorts, and the new route will allow tourists to move faster and more conveniently between different points at altitude.
