Apple will present a new MacBook Air: what to expect

Alina MilsentNews

The release of MacBook Air is one of the most anticipated events for Apple users and fans. There is information circulating online that the company will not hold a separate spring event this year. Like the iPhone 16e, the new MacBook Air is likely to be introduced via a press release and an accompanying video.

Apple CEO Tim Cook announced the new product. MacRumors has revealed the details.

Design

Apple will continue to release MacBook Air in two sizes: 13 and 15 inches. No noticeable design changes are expected, as the company rarely updates the appearance of its devices. The last MacBook Air redesign took place in 2022, so the new models are likely to have the same body.

Display

The MacBook Pro is already equipped with a mini LED display, but this technology is likely to remain a premium. The MacBook Air is expected to continue to use Liquid Retina Display (LED), just like the current models.

The latest MacBook Pro received the option of a matte display with nanotexture. There is a possibility that this option will appear in the MacBook Air, although it may remain exclusive to professional models.

M4 chip

The M4 chip is already used in the MacBook Pro, iMac, iPad Pro, and Mac mini, so its appearance in the MacBook Air is a logical and expected step. Built on TSMC's advanced 3-nanometer process technology, this chip delivers improved performance and increased efficiency. It is expected to deliver up to a 25% performance boost over M3.

RAM

Last year, Apple increased the minimum amount of RAM in the MacBook Air to 16 GB, and it's likely that this configuration will remain unchanged in the new models.

Battery life

Thanks to the increased efficiency of the M4 chip, the battery life of the MacBook Air may increase. For example, the 14-inch MacBook Pro with M4 lasts up to 24 hours of video streaming or 16 hours of web browsing.

FaceTime camera

Apple equipped the MacBook Pro with a 12-megapixel front-facing camera, and it's likely that the MacBook Air will receive a similar upgrade. The camera will support Center Stage, which keeps the user in the center of the frame during video calls. There will also likely be support for Desk View, a feature that provides a view from the top of your desk for easy demonstrations.

Ports and connections

Current MacBook Air models come with two Thunderbolt 3 ports, but the M4 version will feature three Thunderbolt 4 ports, which will improve speed and connectivity.

Discontinuation of the M2 MacBook Air

Apple still sells MacBook Air with the M2 chip for a price starting at $999. However, this model may be discontinued if the transition to M3 raises the overall cost of the line.

Other Air novelties

Although the main novelty will be the M4 MacBook Air, Apple may make a few more surprises. For example, the iPad Air update is scheduled for this spring, and a new version of AirTags is expected in 2025.
