Apple Watch will get new features in 2025: what is known
Apple Watch will have new functionality that will encourage users to take care of their health. Apple plans to install a satellite connection to its smartwatches in 2025 and is actively working on the blood pressure measurement function.
Bloomberg noted that satellite connectivity will be available in the Apple Watch Ultra next year. This technology will allow smartwatch users to send offline text messages via Globalstar Inc. when there is no access to a cellular or Wi-Fi connection.
Also, according to preliminary information, Apple Watch will warn users about high blood pressure. CEO Tim Cook emphasized that the company is working to improve the health and safety features of users.
As a reminder, Apple first launched the satellite communication function with the iPhone 14 in 2022. It allowed to stay in touch with emergency services at all times. After this year's update, you can use the feature to send SMS to anyone via iMessage.
Apple Watch Ultra will be the first smartwatch with satellite capabilities. This move may also give consumers less reason to use standalone satellite communication devices, such as Garmin Ltd.'s inReach.
Although the Apple Watch Series 10 is thinner and has a larger screen, it does not look different from previous models. The company has not updated its Ultra model at all in 2024, although Apple has started offering a black titanium version along with new straps.
The Apple Watch will also receive changes in at least some models: a move away from Intel Corp. cellular modems to versions developed by MediaTek Inc. This exchange will further reduce Apple's dependence on Intel, which previously developed processors for the company's Mac computers.
The move to MediaTek will also include support for 5G Redcap, a lower level of 5G service designed for Internet-connected devices and media that do not typically require fast data connections.
The blood pressure feature is designed to work in a similar way to Apple's sleep apnea detector. It will not provide users with specific readings, such as diastolic or systolic levels, but will inform them that they may be in a state of hypertension.
Apple also continues to work on a non-invasive blood glucose tracker. Samsung Electronics Co., Apple's biggest competitor in the smartphone space, already sells devices with blood pressure capabilities. However, there have been concerns about the accuracy of Samsung's product and the need to calibrate it with a traditional monitor.
