In 2025, a new iPhone 17 Air is due to be released, which, as previously mentioned, may not meet the expected standard in terms of thickness. Earlier, it was reported that the developers faced technical problems in an attempt to make the smartphone thinner.

It also became known that Apple plans to remove the physical SIM card slot in the iPhone 17. The details were reported by MacRumors.

Previously, a report on the ultra-thin iPhone 17 Air stated that in some countries, the iPhone 17 may not feature the SIM card. However, it did not mention specific countries.

In the United States, all iPhone 14-16 models have no space for a SIM card, actively using digital eSIM technology.

So far, Apple has not released any iPhone without a physical SIM card space outside the US, but it looks like the company is looking for ways to encourage the use of eSIMs. The SIM-free iPhone could go international starting with the iPhone 17 line already next September.

The report notes that all current iPhone 17 Air prototypes will not have a SIM card slot.

The developers add that it is not yet clear whether the new gadget will be sold in China, given the innovation, as the country has not approved the use of eSIMs in smartphones.

In 2022, when Apple introduced the iPhone 14, the company touted eSIMs as more secure than physical SIM cards because they cannot be removed from an iPhone that has been lost or stolen. In addition, you can have more than two eSIMs on your phone at the same time, eliminating the need to get, carry, and change physical SIM cards, for example, when traveling.

Although the presentation of the new product is still quite far away, the first data on the gadget is circulating online. It is known that the smartphone will be very thin (5-6 mm), which is one of the reasons why there may not be enough space for a physical SIM card.

Also, according to preliminary information, the iPhone 17 Air will feature Apple's own 5G modem for the first time.

Experts say that to achieve the maximum body thinness, it will be necessary to abandon the second speaker and limit it to only one camera at the back.

Apple is set to present five new gadgets in the spring of 2025.
