Apple Intelligence launch postponed: what it is and why there are problems

Apple has presented its artificial intelligence development strategy. New AI features will be available for iPhone, Mac, iPad, and other devices. Apple representatives have already signed an agreement to use GPT-4o instead of creating their own chatbot.

In general, it became known that Apple Intelligence functions will use a combination of generative AI models and will initially work on the latest Apple devices with an English interface. However, Bloomberg reported that the AI launch had to be postponed for the time being.

The company plans to start deploying Apple Intelligence to customers as part of software updates scheduled for October. The AI features will appear a few weeks after the initial releases of iOS 18 and iPadOS 18 scheduled for September.

Apple plans to make Apple Intelligence available to software developers for early testing this week through the beta versions of iOS 18.1 and iPadOS 18.1, insiders say. The strategy is atypical, as the company usually does not release a preview of updates.

The stakes are higher than usual. Developers have to fix problems and test features on a larger scale. Concerns about the stability of Apple Intelligence features partially forced the company to separate the features from the initial launch of iOS 18 and iPadOS 18.

What is known about the new features

Apple announced new features and operating systems at the Worldwide Developers Conference in June, saying that Apple Intelligence would debut as part of iOS 18 and iPadOS 18.

Traditionally, Apple introduces new iPhones and new software in September. In terms of the Apple Intelligence release, there is a possibility that the first iPhone 16 models sent to consumers this year will not have new AI features and will require a software update in a few weeks.

The company plans to roll out its full set of Apple Intelligence features by the end of 2024 and during the first half of 2025, Bloomberg News reports. In addition to iPhones and iPads, Apple Intelligence will be available on Macs with Apple's own chips as part of macOS Sequoia.

The tech giant is betting on Apple Intelligence to become a worthy competitor in the AI generative space.
