Almost everywhere is ice: a new airport will open on the world's largest island
Greenland is the largest island on the planet, with about 80% of its area covered by an ice sheet. It is an autonomous constituent country within the Kingdom of Denmark. Greenland is located between the Arctic and Atlantic Oceans, east of the Canadian Arctic Archipelago.
Greenland is certainly not the most popular tourist destination. The difficulty was that the island was almost closed to international flights. However, the situation has improved – a new airport has been opened in Greenland. The details were reported by the Express.
Greenland is a great place to see the northern lights, but it was not easy to get there. A new airport was not built before due to infrastructure problems and the need for longer runways.
However, the newly renovated Nuuk Airport has a special runway of 2,000 meters that will allow larger aircraft from global destinations to land.
Before this modernization, the runway was only 950 meters long. In the summer of 2025, a huge event is planned between Nuuk and the United States, Canada, Iceland, and Denmark. This is the first time Greenland will be connected to these countries.
Starting in March 2025, flights will be operated every two weeks to Reykjavik Keflavik Airport and five flights a week to Copenhagen Airport. There will be direct routes to two Danish airports, Billund and Aalborg.
Flights to New York will be available from June 15, and they will be operated by United Airlines, which will operate flights twice a week.
Two more airports are planned to open in 2026 in the south of the island. The new development will also benefit Greenlanders, who will be able to travel more easily to more destinations and will increase the prospects for tourism development.
"This is truly a historic milestone that will create a world of new opportunities for the entire country, as it will provide direct flights across the Atlantic to the capital of Greenland for the first time. Imagine leaving Nuuk in the morning to enjoy French cuisine in Paris the same evening. Today, a new era begins for Greenland," said Jens Lauridsen, Director General of Greenland Airports.
