Spritzing perfume on your wrist and then rubbing it in thoroughly is probably the most well-known way to apply fragrance. There is no benefit from such an application, and even more so, rubbing will disrupt the sound of perfectly balanced aromatic notes.
Even high-quality and niche perfumes will lose their fragrance composition. Experts told us why you shouldn't rub perfume on your wrist and how to apply it correctly.
Mistakes when applying fragrances
Emma South, fragrance specialist at the iconic Jo Malone brand, and Michelle Feeney, founder of the popular Floral Street brand, shared their experience and tips on how to apply fragrances.
At first glance, it may seem that rubbing your wrists after applying perfume is the most effective way to reveal the scent, as the skin absorbs the essence faster.
Emma South notes that this ritual makes sense when applying oil fragrances. However, the era of oil essences is long gone, and rubbing a fragrance applied to the skin with a spray bottle simply spoils the composition and duration of the sound.
Friction generates sudden and uneven heating, which accelerates the evaporation of certain scent molecules, distorting the fragrance.
"Rubbing your wrist can change the scent, and create an uneven distribution, affecting longevity and quality," added Michelle Feeney.
How to apply perfume correctly
Pulse points are one of the most recommended places to apply fragrances – the problem is rubbing.
It is best to let the perfume dry naturally, as this preserves the integrity of the fragrance and ensures an even distribution for a longer-lasting scent.
Pulse points are located on the wrists, neck, elbows, and back of the knees.
Experts recommend spraying the fragrance about 20 cm away from the skin so that it is well-distributed and dries naturally. Applying perfume to damp skin is also an effective life hack.
