A whole field with traces of dinosaurs that lived 166 million years ago has been found in the UK. The excavation site was unearthed by a quarry worker who felt "unusual impacts" when he was removing clay with his work truck.
Scientists were called to the site, and they explored the area for several months. According to TheSun, they found about 200 dinosaur footprints, which belong to two different types.
One of them is the footprints of a nine-meter-long ferocious predator, the megalosaurus, which had huge, characteristic three-toed feet with claws. Megalosaurus was the first dinosaur to receive its name in 1824.
The second type of footprint, according to scientists, belongs to a giant 18-meter-long herbivorous dinosaur, the T. rex.
According to Professor Kirsty Edgar of the University of Birmingham, these tracks open an extraordinary window into the lives of dinosaurs and reveal details about their movements, interactions, and the tropical environment in which they lived.
"The preservation is so detailed that we can see how the soil deformed as the dinosaur's feet squelched in and out. Along with other fossils such as burrows, shells, and plants, we can bring to life the muddy lagoon the dinosaurs walked on," commented Dr. Duncan Murdoch, an Earth scientist at the University of Oxford's Natural History Museum.
