Archaeologists have found a tiny house in Pompeii (Italy) that is filled with erotic frescoes. According to experts, it demonstrates the exquisite way the Romans decorated their homes.

The house is located in the central district of the ancient city. The Pompeii Archaeological Park noted that it is smaller than usual and lacks an open central courtyard - known as an atrium - typical of Roman architecture, CNN writes.

Park director Gabriel Zuchtrigel said the excavations "take place under the eyes of the public," who can access the site on suspended walkways and watch the archaeologists at work.

In the last tiny house excavated, scientists saw elaborate decorations enjoyed by the Romans - several frescoes depict mythical scenes, while others are decorated with plant and animal motifs on a white background.

Erotic paintings attracted the most attention of researchers. One depicts sexual intercourse between a satyr and a nymph, and the other shows Hippolytus, the son of the mythical Greek king Theseus, and his stepmother Phaedra, who fell in love with him before committing suicide when he rejected her.

According to experts, one fresco, which was damaged by previous excavations, probably depicts the trial of Paris, while another shows Venus, the goddess of love, and Adonis, her mortal lover.

Similarly erotic and complex murals have been found in Pompeii before, researchers say. One house covered with erotic frescoes was opened to the public in January 2023. And another fresco depicting an erotic scene from the Greek myth "Leda and the Swan" was discovered in 2018.

Pompeii was destroyed by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD, historians say. Then the city's buildings and thousands of residents were buried under layers of lava and ash. This terrible element seemed to stop and preserve the life of Pompeii, making it one of the most important archaeological sites in the world. After all, archaeologists can understand what everyday life was like for Romans at that time.
