A popular tourist island in Spain will change the method of payment in bars and restaurants: what you should know
Mallorca is not just a popular resort, but a real pearl of the Mediterranean Sea, attracting travelers with a unique combination of natural beauty, rich history and modern infrastructure. It is the largest island of the Balearic archipelago, known for its clean sandy beaches, picturesque mountain ranges and unique caves.
Tourists have been warned about certain changes that may be introduced at the beginning of the warm season. The method of paying for drinks and food will change. The details were reported by the Daily Record.
Many restaurants and bars are considering introducing self-pay systems, which may limit the number of payment options for tourists.
Speaking to Majorca Daily Bulletin, Juanmi Ferrer, president of the CAEB Restaurant Association, said that these changes "may be the only way for some restaurants to survive."
"This is the only solution to be able to continue working," Ferrer said.
The self-pay system will help balance staffing levels and remain profitable, especially during the low season.
Ferrer added that many restaurants are now switching to a system where customers can pay with a QR code. During the Covid-19 pandemic, most establishments have already switched to QR ordering, so this would also add an easier payment option.
The possibility of pre-payment at the cash register, as most Italian restaurants operate, is being discussed. Customers will have to place an order and pay the bill immediately upon entering the establishment before sitting down. This will mean that fewer staff will be needed to set the tables.
The move to these options will potentially limit payment methods for visitors to Mallorca, as it could mean that more bars and restaurants will become cashless. Before traveling, you should check whether your bank charges a fee for using your card abroad.
