Dubrovnik, a picturesque coastal city in Croatia, is becoming more and more popular with tourists every year. Its medieval architecture, walled Old Town, and picturesque views attract travelers from all over the world.

However, the city's excessive popularity has begun to draw criticism. Visitors compare Dubrovnik to Disneyland, where the real Croatian culture has faded into the background due to mass tourism, the Daily Express reports.

Tourist complaints: too expensive and crowded

Travelers who have visited Dubrovnik are increasingly leaving unfavorable reviews. The popular Reddit forum called the city "overcrowded and overpriced." One user noted: "It's a beautiful place, but it's terribly touristy. It's basically a Balkan Disneyland with a minimal amount of Croatian culture."

Another tourist emphasized that the city has become a symbol of mass tourism, especially when cruise ships call. Every day, hundreds or even thousands of passengers disembark at the port, creating excessive crowds.

The impact of Game of Thrones on the city's popularity

Dubrovnik, which was used as a filming location for the Game of Thrones series, experienced a real tourist boom after the release of the cult show. The old town has become a magnet for fans, which has further caused overcrowding.

Despite the introduction of restrictions on the number of visitors, crowds of tourists, especially during the high season, far exceed the permissible limits.

Alternatives for travelers

Tourists who want to avoid the massive crowds in Dubrovnik can plan their trip for the fall and winter when the number of visitors is much lower. Or choose other, lesser-known but no less attractive locations in Croatia.

One such place is the city of Rastoke, which is a two-hour drive from Zagreb. Rastoke is known for its enchanting waterfalls, ideal for nature lovers. Local legends tell of fairies that are said to have lived in the area since ancient times.

Rastoke offers tranquility and a sense of unity with nature, which is often lacking in the touristy Dubrovnik. Here you can enjoy fabulous scenery, learn more about local legends, and take a break from the hustle and bustle of big cities.
