A mysterious plate with an inscription in an unknown language was found in Georgia

A tablet with inscriptions in an unknown language was discovered at Bashplemi Lake in the Manisi municipality of Georgia. The tablet measures 24.1 x 20.1 cm and is made of local vesicular basalt.

There are 60 characters on the plate, 39 of which are different from each other. They are scratched in seven rows running vertically from top to bottom, but the direction in which the inscription should be read remains uncertain, Heritage Daily writes.

Archaeologists suggest that the symbols were made with a conical drill to first make the outlines of the symbols, which were then joined and smoothed with round-headed tools.

"Generally, the Bashplemi inscription does not repeat any script known to us; however, most of the symbols used therein resemble ones found in the scripts of the Middle East, as well as those of geographically remote countries such as India, Egypt and West Iberia," the scientists wrote in the study published in the Journal of Ancient History and Archaeology.

Certain similarities were found with the Proto-Kartvelian script, which appeared in the 4th millennium BC, as well as with symbols found on seals from the territory of pre-Christian Georgia. Most of the similarities were found by comparing the symbols of the tablet with the Caucasian script (Georgian Mrgvlovani, Alba- nian, proto-Georgian).

According to the authors of the study, the found inscription contains several frequently repeated symbols that can symbolize military spoils, an important construction project, or an offering to a deity.
