A fishing village in Spain stunned experts: why you should go there in 2025

In the north of Spain, there is a stunning village that is called one of the most picturesque in the world. San Vicente de la Barquera offers an unforgettable combination of scenery, cultural heritage, and a tranquil atmosphere. San Vicente de la Barquera has a rich historical heritage, including numerous old buildings, medieval churches, and monasteries. The center of the village was recognized as a cultural heritage site in 1987 due to several monuments, including the ancient church, castle, and wall remains.

The 15th-century Puente de la Maza Bridge is a magnificent example of medieval architecture. The bridge consists of several arches made of stone and was built to facilitate communication between different parts of the city, as well as to protect the city from attacks.

The royal castle, also known as Castillo del Rey, was built in the eighth century during the Reconquista when Christian kingdoms were trying to recapture lands from Muslims. San Vicente de la Barquera, due to its strategic location on the coast, played an important role in protecting the region from attacks.

In the XIII century, when Castile strengthened its position in the region, the castle underwent significant reconstruction and expansion. It was then that it acquired the features of a typical medieval castle with walls, towers, and a courtyard. The castle served not only for defense but also as a residence for local rulers and administration.

The village also boasts several stunning beaches, including Fuentes, Primera de San Vicente, and El Rosal.

"The sea hides behind the cape with the white sandy beaches of Meron and Oyambre, which are popular with surfers. The idyllic beach of Maza, sheltered in an estuary, offers sailing and boating trips, as well as easy access to fish restaurants," the experts noted.

The medieval village has also retained its close connection to the sea, and the port remains one of the busiest in the region. An additional advantage is that local restaurants offer the best fresh and traditional dishes.

In the spring, the region organizes loud celebrations that allow tourists to fully immerse themselves in the local flavor, culture, and traditions. This includes the Folia Festival, a celebration of Easter Tuesday, during which a statue of the Virgin de la Barquera is carried through the streets.

As a bonus, the stunning Oyambre Nature Park is known for its diverse ecosystems, including beaches, dunes, marshes, and grasslands. Oyambre is a popular destination for leisure and tourism. Here you can engage in various activities such as hiking, cycling, surfing, and fishing.

The Oiambre Dunes are a unique natural phenomenon that consists of sand dunes stretching along the coast, and the local beach is considered one of the best beaches in Cantabria. It is known for its clean sand and crystal-clear water.
