The famous Ukrainian tennis player who did not shake hands with the Russian refused to play at the Australian Open, withdrawing from the doubles tournament
Ukraine's fourth seed Marta Kostiuk (WTA No. 37) has withdrawn from the Australian Open doubles draw. The 21-year-old from Kyiv was supposed to play in the second round of the Australian Open together with Polish representative Katarzyna Kawa.
The match against Germany's Tamara Korpach and Elixane Leshemie from France was scheduled for the morning of January 20 but did not take place. Korpacz/Leshemie moved on to the third round without a fight, where they will face the French Caroline Garcia/Christine Mladenovic on January 21.
We would like to remind you that in the first round, Kostiuk and Kava defeated the pair of Tatiana Maria (Germany) / Arancha Rus (Netherlands) – 6:0, 6:2.
It is worth noting that Marta was originally entered in the doubles with Elena-Gabriela Rus, but the Romanian tennis player was forced to withdraw from the tournament due to an abdominal muscle injury.
As OBOZ.UA previously reported, Kostiuk continues her performance at the AO in singles. Her 1/8 finals match against Russian Maria Timofeeva (WTA No. 170) will take place on the night of January 21 and will start no earlier than 04:00 Kyiv time.
On January 19, Kostiuk refused to shake hands with Russian Elina Avanesyan after the third round match of the Australian Open 2024. Our compatriot won a dramatic match with a comeback, and then the athletes did not hold the traditional greeting.
