A famous composer with Ukrainian roots was called a "Russian Jew" in Netflix movie Maestro

A mistake was found in the Netflix movie Maestro

The new Netflix biopic Maestro, based on the life and love story of the legendary composer Leonard Bernstein, made an outrageous mistake. The screenwriters of the film shot by Bradley Cooper, who played the iconic pianist, called him a "Russian Jew," even though the talented American's family was originally from Ukraine.

You can hear this when watching the movie in the original voiceover. However, the lion's share of viewers do so. Other translators changed this fact or left it out.

The Russian pirated translation left the quote unchanged, while the Ukrainian dubbing actors corrected the discrepancy and replaced it with "Ukrainian Jew."

The controversial dialog takes place at the very beginning of the movie when the main character is talking to his future wife Felicia, played by Kelly Mulligan.

The main characters were exchanging facts they knew about each other. When Cooper finished, his partner began to recall what she had heard about the pianist. At this point, she called him "a Russian Orthodox Jew, the son of an immigrant."

That would seem okay because Bernstein was indeed born in the United States to Samuel Bernstein and Jennie (Resnick), who emigrated to the United States before World War I. But they moved from the suburbs of Rivne, Ukraine, not Russia.

During the 6 years of making the film, no one involved in the process doubted whether the facts in the biopic were correct. Information about the city from which the composer's family emigrated is available in the English version of Wikipedia, although for some reason Bernstein's family was also called Russians there.
