The auto industry has always been a field for innovative ideas. And concept cars are the bridge between imagination and reality, allowing designers and engineers to look into the future.

Since the mid-20th century, concept cars have become a kind of showcase for the most daring solutions, often ahead of their time. Car and Driver shared the most unique of these .

1955 Ghia Streamline X "Gilda" Coupe

This car was created in collaboration with renowned designer Virgil Exner for Chrysler. The Gilda looks like a car from another planet, with futuristic lines and streamlined shapes reminiscent of the golden age of space travel. At first this car had no engine and was not planned as a working model, but it was later fitted with a gas turbine powerplant.

1960 Plymouth XNR Ghia Roadster

Again, Virgil Exner exceeds all expectations for car design. The XNR is an asymmetrical roadster based on the Plymouth Valiant that surprises with its unusual look. The engine of this car is nothing exceptional, but the look of the XNR certainly left a mark in automotive history.

1988 Cizeta-Moroder V16T.

This prototype was designed by Marcello Gandini and differed from the production V16T cars. The main feature was a transversely mounted 6.0-liter V-16 engine connected to a five-speed manual transmission. This car was the answer to the need for powerful engines when the V-12 no longer seemed sufficient.

1984 Honda HP-X Pininfarina Concept

HP-X became a test platform for the development of the Acura NSX. This car did not have a door in the usual sense - the entire dome was raised to access the interior. Interestingly, the dome also acted as an air brake, although this idea didn't make it into the production NSX.

1979 Aston Martin Bulldog

The Bulldog was Aston Martin's attempt to create a mid-engined car that could compete with Ferrari and Lamborghini. Aston boasted that the Bulldog could reach 322 km/h, which was only proven in 2023 when the car hit 330 km/h at an airfield in the UK.

1976 Ferrari Rainbow Bertone Coupe

Rainbow, designed by Bertone, had a retractable hardtop 35 years before this became popular with the 458 Spider. It is said that Enzo Ferrari was not a fan of this design and vowed not to work with Bertone again afterward.

1975 Lamborghini Countach LP 400 Periscopio
