A group of amateur archaeologists has discovered a compass of the famous astronomer and mathematician Nicolaus Copernicus in Poland's Frombork Palace. The researchers managed to see the 500-year-old artifact, made of copper alloy, with the help of GPR.
Scientists stumbled upon the device, depicted in the famous painting "Conversation with God" by Jan Matejko, in a room located under the garden, writes the Daily Mail. In this room, the scientist created the theory that the center of the universe is the Sun, not the Earth.

"In the garden where Nicolaus Copernicus made his astronomical observations, we found a compass dating back to the early 16th century. This incredible find not only takes us back in time to the period when Copernicus made his groundbreaking discoveries, but also opens up new possibilities for understanding his working methods," said members of the Treasure Mission team who found the unique item.

Archaeologists said that through collaboration with experts, they learned that the compass could be used for precise measurements, which had a major impact on space exploration at the time.

In order to find the artifact, researchers searched for an underground tunnel that, according to legend, Copernicus used to get to the city's cathedral. In 2008, scientists analyzing the grounds of the Frombork Palace discovered several skeleton bones belonging to the famous astronaut. Therefore, the representative of the Museum of Nicolaus Copernicus, Zoryana Polenik notes that the device could well be in the possession of a prominent figure of science.
