A 2000-year-old statue of a woman found in a garbage bag in Greece
A marble statue of a woman, which is more than 2000 years old, was accidentally seen in a garbage bag. The amazing find was discovered near the city of Thessaloniki, Greece.
A local resident noticed an 80-centimeter headless sculpture near a trash can. The man handed the statue over to the authorities, who contacted archaeologists to evaluate the artifact, the Independent reports.
Experts believe that the statue dates from the Hellenistic period – 320-30 BC. According to historical data, it was a time of significant artistic and cultural growth after the conquests of Alexander the Great.
This era witnessed a flourishing of sculpture. Therefore, the discarded statue allows us to look into this rich historical period, archaeologists say.
After the initial assessment, the experts sent the statue for additional examination and will subsequently transfer it to the local antiquities department for preservation and in-depth study.
Police have launched an investigation to determine who dumped the statue and for what purpose, local authorities say.
Accidental archaeological discoveries are quite common in Greece, researchers say. After all, this is a country that is famous for its ancient heritage, and valuable artifacts are often found during construction or public works.
Among the latest finds, in December 2014, workers installing gas pipelines near Athens found a statue of Hermes from the Roman era buried vertically in a brick-lined pit near the Acropolis.
