10 common mistakes at the airport that cost tourists money
Many tourists spend extra money while traveling, not even realizing that they can save money on the simplest things. Especially when it comes to airports.
HuffPost lists the 10 most common mistakes travelers make at airports. They were compiled by personal finance experts.
Paying for expensive parking. Experts advise looking at reviews and studying detailed information about parking lots.
"Depending on how long you are traveling for, parking at an airport lot can be astronomical. You can often find alternative parking options just a mile or two from the airport for less money," says money and budget expert Andrea Worokh.
Spending too much on checked bags. Initially, you should include the cost of luggage in your travel budget. Very often, these amounts are quite significant. Therefore, experts advise taking a minimum of things with you and making an advance payment for checked baggage online and in advance. Sometimes you can get a discount.
Fly without a reusable water bottle. At airports, the price tags are sky-high, and it takes hours to get to check-in and board the flight. Of course, you will at least want water. With your own bottle, you can usually pick up filtered water and save a few dollars, which can add up to dozens, and even hundreds, if you fly frequently.
Shopping. This is something you shouldn't do in places like airports.
"There can be big price fluctuations for the same product in duty-free shops around the world and even in the same airport. There's nothing good about shopping in this place," says James Dunavant, CEO of digital financial platform Tend.
Improper packing of things. This mistake often costs a lot of money because of the restrictions on hand luggage. You should have emergency items in your bag. It's also important to think about what to do in case of a flight delay or loss of your main luggage.
Lack of free amenities. Before the flight, it is important to check the status of the airline loyalty program. These can be vouchers or club access for certain routes. Also, a credit card for free access to the lounge. However, there is usually free food, drinks, and Wi-Fi in the lounges.
No strategic approach to buying snacks. The best option is to bring snacks with you that are suitable for TSA. It's better to order in-flight meals in advance before the plane leaves the ground because snacks are much more expensive in the air.
Expensive rental car. Car rental agencies at airports are very popular, but they are also known for their sky-high prices. Therefore, it is better to book a car at car rental offices outside the airport or use public transportation
Free or cheap public transportation at first glance. Uber is not always the cheapest option. Upon arrival at the airport, taxi drivers can inflate prices. In some cases, it is better to give preference to buses or trams.
Lack of plans for unforeseen expenses. When planning a trip, it's important to set aside extra money in your budget "just in case". It can be food, a visit to the hospital, a trip to the pharmacy, and so on.
