There are places in many parts of the world where life once bustled. Photographers have shared breathtaking abandoned locations in the depths of the water, on land, in the mountains and on the plains.

Many tourists dream of going on a trip where time seems to have stopped and the world has come to an end. OBOZREVATEL collected photos of locations where people have not lived for decades.

Christ from the Abyss

In 1954, a 2.5-meter-high statue of Christ was installed at a depth of 17 meters in the waters of the Italian Riviera. The monument is a popular destination for divers.

Dome houses in the ocean

Dome houses in Florida are slipping further into the ocean from year to year, which is why they attract connoisseurs of mystical buildings. They were buil by an oil tycoon Bob Lee in 1980, and at the time they were considered innovative because they were powered by solar energy.

A city in the middle of the desert

Diamonds were mined in the forgotten settlement of Kolmanskop in Namibia 100 years ago. When the jewelry ran out, people left the town. Nowadays, only tourists come here.

By 1910, Holland Island in the Chesapeake Bay had about 350 residents and 70 apartment buildings. The land in that area consists of clay and silt, so over time the water eroded and destroyed the buildings. Now there is only one house left in the middle of the ocean, becoming an interesting place for tourists.

A shipwreck

A yacht called the Endless Sea sank in the Antarctic in 2014. The expedition members were evacuated, and no one was injured. Picturesque photos and videos from the site became incredibly popular online.

A forgotten theater

The theater in Massachusetts was opened in 1912. However, eventually the building became a tobacco shop. Now the building is in a state of disrepair. Some public organizations hope to restore it.

A city slowly going underground

Travel agencies do not dare to take tourists to the dangerous city of Craco in Italy, which was almost destroyed by an earthquake. Authorities have evacuated the city, but about 500 residents are still living on limestone cliffs.
