Why there are teeth on kitchen scissors: the explanation will surprise you

Scissors are an indispensable tool in everyday life. They are used to cut paper and fabric, as well as in the hairdressing industry. In addition to household scissors, there are various types of industrial scissors: for sheet metal, for cutting cables, etc.

Interestingly, the oldest scissors were found by archaeologists in the Middle East, and they are about 3-4 thousand years old. They were a kind of scissor clamp resembling tweezers with two blades at the ends. The lever in the design began to appear about a millennium ago.

The teeth located between the blades and rods are often used for culinary purposes. They are good for unscrewing jars or opening hard-shelled nuts and chestnuts. However, the real function of these teeth has nothing to do with cooking.

The serrated types of scissors are designed for plant care. This part of the tool has several uses:

• removing thorns from roses;
• pruning small branches;
• removing dead leaves from climbing plants;
• other gardening work.

However, over time, this type of garden shears "moved" to the kitchen. People began to cut off the stems and dry parts of some vegetables or even open cans for canning.

The sharpness of the tool's blades will be possible using such materials:

1. A grindstone is used for knives, scissors, or other objects with blades. In a circular motion, gently run the edge over the stone.
2. Aluminum foil. Fold several layers of aluminum foil and then cut it with scissors to keep the blade sharp.
3. Nail file. This is not the best tool, but it can get you out of a jam. In this case, you will have to make circular movements with the file along the edge of the scissors.
4. Sandpaper. Similar to aluminum foil. The procedure involves cutting out pieces of sandpaper with scissors.
