Who should be the first to enter the lift: rules of etiquette

Rules of etiquette

Every multi-storey building has lifts, which makes life much easier for residents. However, not everyone knows how to behave properly when using them. This not only shows a person's manners, but can also lead to negative consequences.

It is necessary to follow the rules of etiquette to make the trip pleasant for everyone and not to create awkward situations. OBOZREVATEL has taken a closer look at this issue and will help you deal with it.

It often happens that many residents are waiting for the lift and not everyone knows who should go first. According to the rules of etiquette, a man should always let a woman pass, and in the case of a lift, this rule also applies.

But if there are a lot of people near the lift, the person who is closest to the door should enter and exit the car so as not to create a jostling.

The person who has to get off but is standing behind should politely ask to change places to make it easier to get to the door.

Everyone should press the floor buttons independently, but if you are unable to do so, you can ask someone else to do it. You should not smoke, talk loudly on the phone or look at other passengers in the lift.

You shouldn't defiantly turn your back on someone, but you can do so if the traffic is heavy. The shorter the distance you need to travel, the closer you should be to the doors.

If there are already other people in the lift, you don't have to say hello to everyone.

There are often situations when a freight lift is out of order and a person needs to transport their belongings. In this case, you can use a passenger lift. But you need to transport your cargo when the car is empty. If there are people there, wait for the next lift.

Be very careful when using the lift with children. Parents should familiarise their child with the rules of behaviour in the cabins. Children of preschool age are not allowed to ride the lift without an adult. The weight sensors in the car do not work if the passenger is underweight, usually 40 kg.

The child cannot always reach the button, the car may close and the child will be trapped.

Parents should enter and exit the lift first, followed by children. If you want to transport an infant in a pram, first take the baby in your arms, enter the car with him or her, and then quickly take the pram away. And when you get out, you need to do the opposite - first take the stroller out, then get out with the child.

It is strictly forbidden to take a child in a wheelchair into or out of the lift - the doors may close and trap the child.

If you have pets, you also need to follow the rules to make the journey comfortable for both passengers and animals:

  • small cats and dogs should be picked up;
  • be sure to wear muzzles for large and aggressive dogs;
  • the animal should enter the cabin with the owner, but the first person should get out;
  • during the trip, the animal must be held by a leash or collar;
  • a large animal can be transported in a lift only with the permission of other passengers;
  • do not enter a crowded cabin with your pet.
