Which dog breeds may disappear completely: they became less popular

For various reasons, people rarely get dogs of these breeds

It is rather unpleasant to admit, but there is a fashion for dog breeds. And sometimes it leads to very sad consequences. For example, after the first season of Game of Thrones ended, shelters around the world were overwhelmed with abandoned huskies. People massively adopted animals that played direwolves, and then could not cope with their character. Breeds that are not very popular in the media suffer in the same way. They simply disappear over time.

WIO News has collected eight endangered breeds from around the world. Veterinarians are registering fewer and fewer of these dogs, and we risk losing them forever.

Scottish Deerhound

In Scotland, these large, shaggy dogs were bred for hunting, particularly red deer. But the popularity of this activity is declining, in particular for ethical reasons, and fewer Deerhounds are being bred. By nature, this is a rather calm and hardworking but intelligent and friendly dog. It also does not require much training and long walks.

Otterhound

Another hunter on the list. Otterhounds grow up to 35-55 kilograms and can hunt literally anything. They got their name for their special skill in catching otters. The breed requires a lot of physical activity and is best kept in a private home because of its love of jumping out of windows.

Dandie Dinmont Terrier

It's surprising that the popularity of these short-haired dogs with lush "hair" has fallen so dramatically. After all, this is a very gentle dog that will be a great companion for both a quiet bachelor and a noisy family. They get along well with children and other animals. But they will need some activity because they were bred as hunting dogs.

Sussex Spaniel

The breed is considered to be an excellent candidate for a therapy dog because of its friendly nature and affectionate and cheerful disposition. They are intelligent, easy to train, get along well in urban environments, and are very loyal to their owners. But for some reason, people prefer similar Cocker Spaniels.

Skye Terrier

The breed is characterized by its long, silky coat and recognizable ear shape. These small (25-26 cm at the withers) dogs are known for their extreme loyalty to their owners. They do not create problems when kept in an apartment, but require some effort to care for their fur. Skye terriers are known all over the world, but for some reason, they have not gained much popularity.

Glen of Imaal Terrier

Small terriers (up to 35 cm and 16 kg) were massively used for hunting and farm work. They are intelligent, patient, and not prone to aggression unless provoked. Due to their short legs, they do not tolerate heavy loads. They can also suffer from heart and eye diseases. Perhaps that is why, despite their wonderful character, they are not popular.

Norwegian Lundehund

A distinctive feature of the breed is the presence of extra fingers. However, this mutation is not harmful to the animal. Neither does the extraordinary flexibility of its joints. It only adds a cute clumsiness to their appearance. They are well socialized, patient with children and can work as search dogs.

Tibetan Mastiff

First, it is a very large breed, one of the largest in the world. The male reaches 70 cm in height and weighs 80 kg. That is, keeping a Tibetan Mastiff requires a lot of space. Secondly, it is a mastiff, which means that it is a stubborn animal that can show aggression towards a suspicious person. However, in reality, representatives of the breed are generally reserved and strongly attached to their owners. But their upbringing requires considerable effort.
