When to transplant geraniums

Geranium (Cranesbill) is a popular houseplant that is unpretentious in its care. It is loved for its beauty and pleasant aroma. Usually, the plant is transplanted at least once every two years or as needed, but there are times when the plant needs to be transplanted immediately.

OBOZ.UA has collected for you the signs that the flower is not feeling well and needs to be transplanted.

Geraniums are not very fond of change, so you don't need to transplant them too often. However, if you notice signs that the plant is not doing well, such as your geranium's leaves starting to turn yellow and curl, the plant has stopped growing and developing, or roots sticking out of the drainage holes, you should transplant it as soon as possible. Another alarming signal is constantly wet soil, as this indicates that the root system is likely to rot.

How to transplant geraniums correctly?

Two hours before transplanting, water the geranium abundantly.

Then choose a pot that is roomy enough, but not too spacious, and work on the soil. You can buy it at the store, where it will be ready to use immediately, or you can make the mixture yourself.

Geraniums need loose and not too nutritious soil, so mix equal parts soil, river sand, and humus or horse peat. Mix well and treat the mixture with potassium permanganate before transplanting. You can also sterilize the soil in the oven.

Transplanting geraniums

Once everything is ready, place drainage and sphagnum, if available, in the bottom of the pot and sprinkle with a little soil. Carefully remove the geraniums without shaking them off the ground. If necessary, remove any damaged roots, place the plant in a new container, and add the required amount of potting mix.

Place the pot in the sun for about a week to make the geraniums adapt and feel good.
