What you can wipe the TV screen with: tips for different models

Yulia PoteriankoLife
Today's screens require gentle cleaning

Cleaning a modern TV is not as easy as it seems, because most household dust sprays are not suitable for such devices. But it is also not too difficult, if you know what manufacturers and experts recommend to remove stains from the screen and body.

Which has compiled some basic recommendations on the subject. They'll help you clean your TV safely so it transmits images as clearly and brightly as possible.

Choosing the right cleaner

There are dozens of cleaners for various surfaces in your home, from countertops to windows, but many are too aggressive to use on a thin TV screen. Most manufacturers state this explicitly in the instructions and give their advice on the choice of cleaner.

So the most general advice is not to use any rare products and make do exclusively with a dry soft cloth, preferably a microfiber cloth. As a last resort, you can dampen the cloth with water or a solution of neutral detergent, which requires 100 parts of water per 1 part of it. After wet cleaning, be sure to wipe the TV dry.

Five steps on how to clean the TV screen without leaving streaks

Unplug the TV before you start. Use a soft, dry cloth, ideally a microfiber or something similar that you can wipe your glasses with. Do not use a rough cloth or paper towels. They can damage the delicate screen.

Carefully clean the surface in small circles. Avoid pressing on the TV.

Some televisions are less stable than others, and you may need to support the back of the screen with your free hand. OLED TVs, which have an incredibly thin screen, especially need this precaution.

If there are stubborn marks on the screen, use a water soap solution or a special TV screen cleaner according to your manufacturer's recommendations. Apply the solution or water only to a cloth, and never directly to the screen.

Allow the screen to dry completely before plugging the TV back in. The cleaner may not react well to the heat of the appliance.

What products to avoid?

Modern screens are coated with special substances that are supposed to minimize glare and fingerprints, and it's important not to damage this coating. And almost all of the cleaners you use in the kitchen and bathroom are capable of washing away these substances. So to be safe, it's best to avoid them all.

Do LCD and OLED screens need to be cleaned differently?

No, these types of screens can be cleaned in the same way. Products that are labeled as being specifically for a certain type are nothing more than a marketing gimmick.

What other parts of the TV should be cleaned?

TV ports such as HDMI and USB inputs can become clogged with dust. This can impair their functionality if you want to use them after a long break. Also, connecting to a dusty port can push dust inside the TV, which is potentially dangerous.

So wipe the ports with a cloth from time to time. If they're particularly dusty, you can use a vacuum cleaner on the lowest power to remove the dirt. But be careful and keep the nozzle away from the TV so you don't damage it. Try not to push on the port, as this can damage the connection.
