What to do to prevent onions from turning yellow: how to save the crop

Alina MilsentLife
Onions turn yellow

Most often onions begin to turn yellow during the active summer heat. The main reason is that the soil is too dry, so the plants signal a lack of moisture.

The basic rule of watering is that in June and July the plant should be watered at least twice a week, taking into account, of course, the weather conditions and rainfall. What to do to prevent the yellowing of onions - read in the article OBOZREVATEL.

How to water onions correctly

From late July until harvest, watering should be reduced to an average of once a week. But often, even when the soil is regularly moistened, the feathers continue to turn yellow. The reason may be too cold water. In the summer heat, the soil warms up quickly and watering with cold water will be a real stress for the plants. The water temperature should be at least 20 °C.

Lack of nitrogen

Without nitrogen nutrition, onions will become sickly, yellowing, and shrinking. Yellowing in this case is accompanied by deformation of the leaves, their thickening and shortening. The best source of nitrogen is green fertilizer. You can also prepare an infusion of poultry manure, adding it to a bucket of water. The solution should stand for at least a week. Then dilute 1 liter of tincture in 10 liters of water and water the onions under the root. If you use store mineral fertilizers, it is recommended to dilute them at a ratio of 15 g per bucket of water.

Pest attacks

The main reason for the pest attack is a violation of crop rotation rules. If you grow onions in the same bed year after year, they will be regularly devoured by onion flies. To determine the presence of pests, dig up the bulb and check its condition: light-colored larvae and rotting of the fruit are obvious signs of onion fly "work".

Cutting an onion in half, sometimes you can see stem nematodes. It is impossible to save such plants, the onion in such a case should be thrown away immediately.

Tobacco and onion thrips are tiny insects that leave silver-white flecks on onion feathers. Onions begin to lose color and turn yellow. It is not possible to consume the affected feathers in such a case, but there is still a chance to save the bulbs with the help of chemical insecticides.

In addition, weevils can appear on the onion - they eat the feathers from the inside. Onion moths lay eggs in the soil and cause yellowing.

Among the folk methods of pest prevention you can use mustard powder, hot pepper and sunflower ash. These remedies are simply scattered on the bed.

Ammonia alcohol (take 2-3 tablespoons per bucket of water) or boric acid (2 g per bucket of water) are useful for spraying.

Diseases

Yellowed leaves are a symptom of bacterial and bottom rot. Damaged plants should be removed immediately, and it is recommended to treat the bed with fungicides.
