What were the surnames of the nobility of the Kyiv province: examples

Yulia PoteriankoLife
There were hundreds of noble families in the Kyiv province

Despite the imposed notion of Ukrainians as a people of peasants, the stratum of nobility and gentry in our country was considerable. This is evidenced, in particular, by the existence of the publication List of Noble Families of the Kyiv Province and other similar compilations. It published data from the Noble Pedigree Book of the Kyiv province.

This book was kept since 1785, and people entered the list of noble families in alphabetical order. According to Wikipedia, it was published in the printing house of the Kyiv Noble Deputy Assembly in 1906, and permission for its publication was given by the Kyiv governor.

In order to be included in this list, a person of noble birth had to present the district leader of the nobility the appropriate documentary evidence of such rights. Then they were submitted to the provincial noble deputy assembly. Only after the appropriate decision was made was the name entered in the register.

The list was divided into six parts. The nobles were recorded in them according to the following characteristics:

  • families of the nobility of the salaried or real nobility;
  • the families of the military nobility;
  • families of the nobility acquired in civilian service, as well as those who received the right of hereditary nobility by order;
  • all foreign families;
  • titled families;
