What is forbidden to vacuum: a dangerous situation may arise

Life hacks for cleaning

A vacuum cleaner is an indispensable cleaning tool, but mistakes in its use can lead to disastrous consequences. There's a risk that the dust bag will tear, the filter will get clogged, or even the motor will break down.

Certain things, such as broken glass, the remains of indoor plants, wet food, and paper decor, are likely to clog the filters and cause the engine to stop. Experts told us what is forbidden to vacuum and whether the device can be used to fight spiders.

Vacuum cleaner vs. insects

A vacuum cleaner won't save arachnophobes and insectophobes from unnecessary stress, but it will make life much easier. It turns out that using a vacuum cleaner to control spiders and beetles is not so bad, although it may be a bit cruel.

"Fragile insects won't survive the suction, but spiders and large beetles can survive and crawl back out," warns Daniel Dougal, a cleaning expert at Godfreys. So you should either empty the trash can immediately or use other means to get rid of spiders in the house.

What things should not be vacuumed

Vacuum cleaners are usually partially made of plastic, so there is a risk that some things could catch fire. Do not use the vacuum cleaner to clean flammable materials, hot ashes, or batteries.

Shattered glass can become clogged in the hose, scratch the inside of the appliance, or puncture the fabric waste container.

Soil, soda, and coffee grounds are likely to clog the filters.

Do not attempt to vacuum liquids, even if you are using a cordless model. Moisture will cause mold to form inside the dust bag or container, which can lead not only to the appearance of pathogenic fungal spores, but also to the failure of the entire system.

Errors in the use of the device will lead to at least inefficient cleaning, at most - to expensive repairs or the need to buy a new vacuum cleaner.

Don't forget to change vacuum attachments to pick up dust more easily in specific areas.

"Many people make the mistake of using only one vacuum attachment for cleaning. Most vacuum cleaners come with at least a small set of tools and accessories. Upholstery tools, for example, help pull lint out of furniture fibers, and dusting attachments come in handy for cleaning lampshades and other delicate surfaces," Dougal said.
