What colors are called karmazynovy and kubovy in Ukrainian: philologist surprised by the answer
After years of suppression of the Ukrainian language, a stereotype has emerged in society that it is not very rich lexically. Oleksandr Avramenko, a Ukrainian linguist and teacher, set out to refute this misconception. He chose the names of flowers as one of the examples.
In his express-lesson for one of the morning TV shows he offered the viewers to guess what colors and shades three Ukrainian words are used for, which are zharysty, kubovy and karmazynovy. (To watch the video, scroll to the end of the news).
To simplify the task for the viewers, the linguist immediately provided answer options. For people interested in the Ukrainian language, Avramenko suggested comparing these names with such colors as indigo, dark crimson and scarlet.
The easiest one using is to define hot through simple logic. Its name indicates that it is the color of heat, fire. Thus, the correct answer for zharysty is scarlet.
Kybovy is the Ukrainian name for bright blue. Such a shade is also called indigo.
Karmazynovy is dark crimson. It's also a dark red color.
"Friends, let's take care to subtly convey every emotion, every color and every shade," Avramenko summed up his lesson.
