The famous Russian motorcycle racer Sergey Karyakin, who won the famous Dakar 2017 in the ATV class in 2017 and became the Dakar vice-champion in the T3 class in 2020, spoke about his attempt to take part in the competition in China. The 32-year-old athlete decided that since China is positioning itself as a friend of Russia, he would not be forced to sign documents condemning the war in Ukraine.

At the end of September last year, the International Federation of Motor Sport (FIA) issued a questionnaire for Russians, which required them to condemn the "Russian special operation" in order to participate in any competition under the auspices of the FIA.

"One smart person suggested: "Sergey, there is a race in China. Write to them, they are friends, and the participation of Russian athletes will strengthen the friendship of peoples, and Xi Jinping came to Moscow and said that more competitions should be held. I wrote a letter and received a reply: wait, we'll get back to you soon. A few weeks passed, and I reminded them of myself. Silence again. I sent another letter, after which the Chinese replied," Match TV quoted Karyakin as saying.

Instead of the friendly invitation to the tournament that the Russian was expecting, he received a completely different text.

"The answer was this: "Guys, we'll be glad to see you, come and race. But just sign the letter from the FIA". The same letter rejecting the FIA and our country's position. That was the end of the correspondence. This is how they treat our friendship. It was very disappointing to read this," the pilot was outraged.

Karyakin added that he wants to believe that there was some kind of misunderstanding, but he is not going to write a new letter.

"Everything is clearly written there: it is permissible when signing a document from the FIA. At the same time, the competition is local, not under the auspices of the international federation," the driver said.

As OBOZREVATEL previously reported, in October, Sergey Karyakin demanded that support for the murder of Ukrainians be allowed so that he could compete in the competition
