Ukraine will receive MiG-29 fighters from Slovakia

Slovakia will send 13 MiG-29 fighter jets and part of the Soviet-made Kub anti-aircraft missile systems to Ukraine. On March 17, the government decided on the free transfer of technology in accordance with the Constitution of the Slovak Republic.

This was announced during a press conference by Prime Minister Eduard Heger, who confirmed it on his Twitter account. It is noted that the decommissioned Slovak vehicles will help protect Ukraine.

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy officially asked Slovakia to supply MiG-29 fighter jets to protect Ukraine from Russian aggression back in February. At the time, Heger said that the country would do everything possible to fulfil this request.

As a reminder, Slovakia became the first NATO member state to provide combat aircraft to the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Initially, it was expected that there would be ten of them.

Bratislava stopped using its MiG-29s last summer due to a lack of spare parts and maintenance specialists - previously, this was done by Russian technicians who had returned home. At the same time, the Ukrainian Air Force is actively flying MiGs, so they will need a few more.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has already responded to Slovakia's decision. He expressed his gratitude to the country and to Heger personally.

"Our Brussels agreements are working! In a telephone conversation, I thanked Prime Minister of Slovakia Eduard Heger for a powerful package of air and anti-aircraft weapons, including MiG aircraft. I appreciate his personal role in supporting Ukraine. I will be glad to continue our dialogue in Kyiv," Zelenskyy wrote.

As reported by OBOZREVATEL:

- Poland will also hand over 4 MiG-29 fighters in full working order to Ukraine in the coming days. The remaining combat aircraft are being serviced and prepared for shipment;

- Lithuania has said that Ukraine will receive fighter jets from its Western partners. It is only a matter of time;

- At the same time, Turkey has banned the maintenance of Russian and Belarusian aircraft if they have at least 25% of their components from the United States. This decision was made at the request of the US Department of Commerce's Bureau of Industry and Security.
