The crew of the Russian Ocean Way round-the-world expedition was attacked by sharks off the coast of Australia and damaged the catamaran. The half-drowned vessel sailed in the Coral Sea for more than a day, until a second attack by predators forced the travelers to make an SOS signal.

All three crew members - Russians Evgeny Kovalevsky, Stanislav Berezkin and Frenchman Vincent Thomas - were rescued by other sailors. This was reported on the official page of the expedition (to see the photo, scroll to the end of the page).

It is reported that the "attackers" were cutthroat sharks or luminescent Brazilian sharks (cookiecutter). These are small deep-sea predators that rise to the surface in search of food. They gnaw into larger fish, tearing chunks off their prey.

The first shark attack occurred on September 4. Damage was sustained to the catamaran's rear left cylinder, causing it to become completely submerged. In an emergency state, the travelers lasted about a day, sailing another 160 kilometers.

The next day, September 5 at 23:00, cutthroat sharks damaged the starboard tank. The crew made an emergency distress call, and within 45 minutes, the Dugong Ace, a dry cargo ship bound for Shanghai, came to the rescue.

All of the crew's belongings managed to be evacuated along with the people, but the catamaran remained in the ocean. Currently, travelers are being taken to the Australian city of Brisbane.
