Shakhtar play the return leg of the round of 16 in Rotterdam

Shakhtar Donetsk lost in the return leg of the Europa League round of 16 and ended their participation in European competitions. Igor Jovicevic's team lost 1-7 to the local club of the same name at the Feyenoord Stadium in Rotterdam.

From the very first minutes, the hosts put the Ukrainians under intense pressure. Shakhtar had a hard time crossing the halfway line, mostly defending. Feyenoord sometimes did not even allow our compatriots to take the ball out of their penalty area, making interceptions after interceptions, and in the 9th minute they succeeded.

After losing the ball in the centre of the pitch, the Dutch easily crossed the halfway line, the ball fell to Santiago Jimenez, who played off several of our defenders and scored a precise shot past Trubin.

The dominance of the 15-time Dutch champion was absolute, which soon led to the second goal. After cutting back the Ukrainians, the hosts easily broke through the defence and Orkun Kökçü made it 2-0.

Before the break, the favourite scored a winner. After a flank attack, Oussam Idrissi's shot fell into the hand of Yukhym Konoplya and Spanish referee Jesus Gil Manzano confidently pointed to the 11-yard box. Kökçü converted the penalty.

Shakhtar's humiliation continued after the break. "The Orange and Blacks" conceded four goals and were close to repeating their historic anti-record. In 2015, Shakhtar lost 0-7 to Bayern Munich in the Champions League.

However, Kevin Kelsey saved the team's reputation by scoring a prestige goal in the 87th minute.

As OBOZREVATEL reported, the first match between the Dutch and Ukrainian clubs ended in a 1-1 draw. In that game, Yaroslav Rakitskiy scored an incredible backhanded goal, causing a sensation among the fans.
