A new study has shown that wine can reduce the risk of coronavirus infection. This conclusion applies to both white varieties of the drink and champagne.

The results of the study were published in the journal Frontiers In Nutrition. Specialists at Shenzhen Kangning Hospital in China analysed data stored in the UK Biobank database

According to the report, people who drank five or more glasses of red wine a week had a 17% lower risk of contracting the coronavirus. Scientists believe this is due to the high polyphenol content in the drink, which helps fight the virus.

However, not only red wine has such protective properties. As it turned out, white and champagne wine can also reduce the risk of contracting COVID-19. The study showed that those who drank one to four glasses of either of these drinks per week were 8% less likely to be infected with the coronavirus.

At the same time, the study has bad news for beer lovers. As it turned out, those who consumed any amount of this foamy alcoholic beverage had a 28% higher risk of contracting the coronavirus. A similar result was found for cider.

At the same time, the Express drew attention to an important conclusion: the fact that wine can reduce the risk of contracting COVID-19 should not encourage people to abuse alcohol, as alcohol has been proven by scientists to have many negative health effects.

Beer or cider should not be treated radically either. It is also emphasised that none of the drinks can replace vaccination, which can really protect against infection.
